Before you act

  • Written vendor rights for storage, display, redistribution, derived metrics, and retention must be reviewed before any production feed or public historical pages launch.
  • Open interest and volume are different measures. Snapshot completeness, observation time, adjusted contracts, multiplier changes, and stale data can invalidate comparisons.
  • The minimum can span an interval or extend beyond the observed strikes. A single reported candidate is not a unique predicted settlement price.

Calculation notes & limitations

At settlement S, call intrinsic payout is Σ max(S − K, 0) × call OI × multiplier. Put payout is Σ max(K − S, 0) × put OI × multiplier.

The sorted-strike calculation uses cumulative counts and strike-weighted sums, avoiding a quadratic scan. Zero-total-OI snapshots produce no max-pain result.

This implementation accepts only a single consistent contract multiplier and expiry per comparison. It does not infer exposure direction, dealer positioning, or market impact.

02 / Look under the hood

The method is part of the tool.

Use only data you are entitled to analyze. Record underlying, expiry, snapshot date, multiplier, and source, with duplicate-strike checks.

Sum intrinsic call and put payouts across strikes and identify the minimum among observed settlement strikes. Preserve ties and the no-open-interest state.

Compare only matching expiry snapshots. Keep volume separate from open interest, and never interpret max pain as a forecast.
